Yarrow is used to make Remedies

The leaves and flowers of Yarrow are used to make remedies. Yarrow is used for fever, common cold, hay fever, to improve menstruation, to stop dysentery, diarrhea, to improve appetite, to assist gastrointestinal (GI) tract discomfort, and to induce sweating. It stops bleeding externally and internally. When you get a wound, it helps form a scab. The powdered dry herb or the fresh herb poultice stops bleeding from deep cuts and wounds almost immediately. Yarrow’s anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it a perfect first aid remedy. A yarrow tea bath or topical application with the ointment or oil can be useful for rheumatic joints and varicose veins. Some people chew the fresh leaves to relieve toothache.

Coconut Oil’s many benefits as a natural remedy

Coconut Oil’s many benefits as a natural remedy

Coconut Oil has many health benefits and many find it is amazing in many ways! For centuries, coconut oil has been considered a vital source of food for health and general well-being.

In tropical countries where coconut palm trees abound, locals have long been benefitting from this so-called “Tree of Life”. Research shows that virgin coconut oil, like mother’s milk, is rich in lauric acid which is known for its antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiprotozoal properties needed for good health and well-being.

The benefits of Coconut Oil is a book that tells about the bountiful nutritional treasure trove of the humble coconut that most of us are totally unaware of.

Some of These Benefits of Coconut Oil Include:

  • Improve and protect your skin!
  • Help you burn fat!
  • Provide your body with the healthiest nutrients found in nature!
  • Increase your energy!
  • And help you avoid heart disease, cancer, thyroid-related problems and so much more!
  • But there are still some very important things you MUST know to benefit the most from coconut oil…

The following is an excerpt of a book about Coconut Oil that tells of its amazing health benefits. (The links in this post are affiliate links for a commission to help pay for this blog) You can get the eBook or the Physical Book shipped to you. A wealth of knowledge worth every penny.

In this book you will learn among other things that firstly, not all coconut oil is created equal—some are better than others. As was the case when coconut oil was used heavily in the food processing industry years ago, there is still a lot of refined coconut oil in circulation. Obviously, the more processed the oil, the fewer health benefits it possesses.

Some points covered in this book are:

  1. It’s no secret that breastfeeding is about the best thing a mother can do to boost her child’s immune system. What makes mother’s milk so healthy is that it contains high amounts of lauric acid. Besides mother’s milk, there are only three dietary sources of lauric acid – and coconut oil is the most concentrated of the three!
  2. Researchers have discovered that in cultures where unrefined coconut oil is a part of the everyday diet, there is less obesity and less lifestyle-related disease. Unfortunately, very little coconut oil is consumed in the U.S. and metabolic syndrome along with its symptoms of obesity, diabetes and heart disease—is reaching epidemic proportions!
  3. Over 13 million Americans suffer from low thyroid function with little understanding of the cause. It’s really no wonder because most processed foods contain iodine blockers—and iodine is essential for optimum thyroid function! If you’re cooking with vegetable oil—it might be time to stop for your thyroid’s sake! Plus, without a healthy thyroid, weight loss is nearly impossible—, especially for women.
  4. People living in the tropics have beautiful, wrinkle-free skin because coconut oil is not only part of their diet—but also their beauty regimen! Coconut oil is a naturally moisturizing cleanser—and an effective sunscreen, blocking out 20 percent of harmful rays… thanks to the medium-chain fatty acids that protect and heal the skin at the same time. And good for the hair when added to shampoos.
  5. Alzheimer’s is on the rise—but you can do something now to protect your brain from the devastating effects of this savage disease! How? By helping your body produce ketones—an alternative energy source for your brain! When MCTs—medium chain triglycerides—are metabolized by the body, ketones are created
  6. Cancer cells feed and grow in our body until the illness can eventually take over and ruin our health. And that’s only if it doesn’t kill us. Don’t be terrified by cancer anymore! Because researchers have discovered it’s possible to actually “starve” cancer cells. This pro-active defense leaves the body more able to fight the disease than being assaulted with chemotherapy!
  7. Detoxing is quite popular these days—but beware! Many detox methods found on the internet are not grounded in science but are instead “fad” diets meant to make someone else a lot of money! Coconut oil has amazing detox abilities and bolsters your energy during a detox program!

Heart disease is a scary disease often treated with even scarier drugs—like statins! Statins (cholesterol lowering drugs) deplete the body of vital heart-nourishing nutrients and can do more harm than good! Coconut oil is full of heart-healing benefits and can help prevent the need for such drugs—and even help keep you from getting sick in the first place!

Everyone has a small amount of yeast living in their mouth and intestines. It serves an important role when it comes to digestion and nutrient absorption, but when it overpopulates—watch out! It actually breaks down the walls of the intestines and seeps into the bloodstream, where it releases toxins. This leakage can cause a number of health conditions! In fact, more people have illnesses related to yeast, or Candida, than realize… maybe you’re one of them.

It may sound too good to be true, but mountains of research prove—coconut oil can do wonders for your health! As you’ve seen here, this one simple oil you can purchase right off the shelf at your local grocer can.

Coconut as a Remedy for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Like all things pure and natural, the virgin coconut oil is extracted from fresh coconuts, unlike other commercial grade oil which came from dried coconut meat of copra. Virgin coconut oil has an important role in finding treatment and remedy for many of the illnesses brought upon by an unhealthy lifestyle and the refined diet of modern living.

Get this book to learn about the many benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil has fatty acids that assist the metabolism:

According to research, coconut oil has the highest source of saturated fats and medium chain fatty acids which is necessary to increase metabolism and are more easily digested than fats found in other oils. The medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil are absorbed quickly by the tissues and converted into energy. People suffering from chronic fatigue would gain many benefits when they take coconut oil in their diet.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome used to be considered an imaginary ailment. But nowadays, it has been affecting women between 30’s and 50’s. This has become a problem of growing concerns among 3 million Americans and 90 million people worldwide.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a condition characterized by prolonged and extreme tiredness that is not relieved by rest and is not directly caused by other medical conditions. This fatigue can be so severe that it can keep us from our in regular activities. CFS may subsequently cause possible social isolation as well as lifestyle restrictions.

Research on Coconut Oil:

Researchers are still in a quandary as to the cause of this condition. However, some suspect that it could be caused by a virus called Epstein-Barr or human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6), though no definite viral cause has been identified. According to research, CFS may be caused by inflammation of pathways in the nervous system. This inflammation seems to act as an immune response.

CFS may develop when a viral disease is complicated by a problem with the body’s immune response. Different factors such as age, prior illness, stress, environment, or genetics may also play a role.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) describes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as a distinct disorder with specific symptoms and physical signs, based on ruling out other possible causes. The number of persons with CFS is unknown.

Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome may be similar to those of common viral infections such as muscle aches, headache, and fatigue often developing within a few hours or days and lasting for six months or more.

Main symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

  • Fatigue or tiredness, the kind of exhaustion that has never been experienced before by the patient, and which lasts for at least six months and is not relieved by bed rest
  • Fatigue that is so severe it restricts activity (serious fatigue develops with less than one-half of the exertion compared to before the illness)

Other symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

  • Fatigue lasting more than 24 hours after an amount of exercise that would normally be easily tolerated
  • Mild fever (101 degrees F or less)
  • Sore throat
  • Lymph node tenderness in the neck or armpit muscle weakness all over or multiple locations, not explained by any known disorder Muscle aches also known as myalgias
  • Feeling unrefreshed after sleeping an adequate amount of time
  • Headaches, different from previous headaches in quality, severity, or pattern
  • Joint pain, often moving from joint to joint (migratory arthralgias), without joint swelling or redness
  • Forgetfulness or other similar symptoms including difficulty concentrating, confusion, or irritability

Once you experience persistent, extreme fatigue, with or without other symptoms of this disorder, contact your professional health care provider. Other more serious disorders can cause similar symptoms and should be ruled out.

With coconut oil now considered as a functional food, modern medicine is looking at it as a powerful tool against disease of the immune system as well as chronic fatigue syndrome. Much research has been undertaken on its effectiveness, and further studies are currently underway on the outstanding nutritional value of coconut oil.

Coconut trees can be found in almost all of the 7, 107 islands of the Philippines — a hot, humid, and tropical country located in Southeast Asia. For centuries, the inhabitants of these islands have turned to the coconut tree — the so-called “Tree of Life” — as a source of materials for shelter, food, and alternative medicine. The coconut tree is called “Tree of Life” because almost all of its parts can be utilized. The trunk is used as lumber; the woven leaves are used for roofing; and even midribs from the stems are brought together to form a native broom.

More About Coconut:

Coconut oil is a natural product that comes from the coconut palm. This oil is derived from fresh coconut meat to produce a food supplement known as Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO).

Using the “cold press” method, the coconut oil is extracted by grating the fresh coconut and by squeezing the coconut meat. The coconut milk is put into a sanitary container, covered, and allowed to stand for about 24 to 36 hours. The “virgin” coconut oil which naturally separates from the water content of the coconut milk is then transferred to another container. At that stage, the VCO is ready for consumption without cooking, heating, or any other process that might take away some of the nutritional properties of the virgin oil.

Coconut Oil as a Skin an Hair Treatment:

Lately, coconut oil has been given much attention not only for its use in cooking but also for its value as a hair and skin care product. The VCO is actually used as a hair tonic and skin moisturizer. Many Filipinos use coconut oil to maintain youthful, wrinkle-free skin. VCO can also be used to treat sunburned skin.

Research findings show that VCO is an effective ingredient for skin care treatment. The virgin coconut oil is high in antioxidants that penetrate into the concealed tissues of the skin. The oil helps protect the body against the formation of free radicals which are molecules that rob electrons from the millions of cells in the human body. Free radicals damage and destroy these cells including the body’s connective tissues. These tissues are responsible for keeping the skin elastic and flexible. VCO helps to strengthen these connective tissues and aid in the prevention of skin sagging and wrinkling. VCO softens and moisturizes the skin, and removes dirt from the outer layer of the skin making it shiny and smooth.

Many skin care solutions in the market are made from vegetable oils that have gone through various refining processes, making these products prone to free radical generation. These processes have stripped these products of most of the essential antioxidants.

Virgin coconut oil is still a very good skin care treatment alternative since it has retained its antioxidant properties. The antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties of VCO are from the presence of lauric acid in the oil. Lauric acid helps prevent disease-causing bacteria that may lead to skin infections.

Medical experts now advise people to take at least two tablespoons of VOC a day as a preventive measure against bacterial infection.

VCO kills many forms of viruses and bacteria that cause pneumonia, ear and throat infections, and other illnesses. Instead of taking antibiotics and other synthetic drugs, people should now consider the use of VCO as a food supplement and over-all health aid.

Ginseng herb and the natural benefits of taking ginseng

Ginseng herb and the natural benefits of taking ginseng

Ginseng tea is great for short periods; this tea can alleviate many symptoms of common aliments and lessen fatigue. Ginseng is the main ingredient to many of the medicinal teas. However, prolonged use can lead to insomnia and heart trouble, so be sure to consult your physician before drinking ginseng tea regularly as an alternative to coffee for that afternoon pick me up.

  • In China and Asia ginseng is held in high regard.
  • It is believed that ginseng has rejuvenating powers and provides stimulation to the whole body.
  • Taking ginseng has been known to lessen craving for sweet and candy
  • Ginseng also offers protection against fatigue and is known to be a stimulant for the central nervous system.
  • This root can also help with inflammation, fever, and hormonal imbalances to name a few benefits.

  • With its adaptogenic properties ginseng not only fights stress, but helps enhance your mental clarity to keep you focused and energized all day long.

The tea is usually made from the Wisconsin ginseng root but this is not the premium ginseng. Slices can be steeped to create a tea that is a strong as the consumer would like, or purchased as a powder and brewed using tea balls. Both of these methods let the drinker control the amount of tea used. There are ginseng tea bags available from specialty stores, but it is not recommended to buy the tea without reading all the ingredients as some packaged teas are sold as ginseng but in fact have very little of this herb in them, instead use mostly fillers. It is also sold as a tincture which is perhaps the strongest and fastest working method of taking ginseng.

Consult an herbal practitioner or naturopath as to the right type of ginseng and how to brew your tea.

The tea can be sweetened with a little honey or stored cold in the refrigerator, as this tea is quite good served iced.

Take note, if you are pregnant use ginseng sparingly or not at all

Brewer’s Yeast as a nutritional supplement

Brewer’s Yeast as a nutritional supplement

Brewers yeast, also called nutritional yeast, tastes great sprinkled on popcorn. And it is a powerhouse of nutrition. Especially the B Group Vitamins. Tastes like cheese or Cheetos. Not all yeast is good, but this one is. It’s packed full of the B vitamins and other goodies. Tastes great sprinkled on popcorn or cooked cauliflower and so healthy.

Brewers yeast is so good for you but it is not the same yeast you put in dough to make bread. It is a rough powdery nutritional supplement. Not to be confused with yeast for bread.

The two are not equal. Eating raw yeast used in bread making is not good for you. The baking kills the yeast after it has done its work of raising the bread. Then the bread is good, tastes delicious and has no more yeast action.

Nutritional yeast is not used in bread making but it is added to supplements or food preparations because of its cheesy taste. It’s the same strain of yeast bakers use to leaven bread, except it’s been pasteurized to dry out the yeast to extract its nutritional benefits.

Here are some interesting things about brewers yeast.

Pubmed.gov says this about brewer’s yeast…

Yeast is a unicellular fungus, and there are hundreds of species.  One of the most notable and well-known species of yeast in health and wellness is known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is also known by its more common names, brewer’s yeast or baker’s yeast.

Typically, brewer’s yeast is used as a protein supplement, energy booster, immune enhancer, or other vehicle where other compounds can be inserted to create a commercialized health product.

For example, one of the most notable positive findings was the encouraging results from a large randomized trial of adults recently vaccinated for seasonal influenza who also received an over-the-counter daily adjuvant modified brewer’s yeast-based product (EpiCor) to prevent colds and flu symptoms. The modified yeast-based product significantly reduced the incidence and duration of this common condition.

Yeast-based technology is also being used with the goal of improving the human life span. The current and potential impact of yeast-based technology in medicine is encouraging and should receive more attention, but the recent preliminary positive results of CR in humans may be in part due to what has been already learned from brewer’s yeast.

How to use Herbs as tea for health benefits

How to use Herbs as tea for health benefits

Herbal Tinctures & Teas:

Single Cup Infusers

There are many ways to prepare herbal remedies. The ones presented here were developed through trial and error over the course of centuries of use.

Herbalists have found that each herb releases its healing powers in certain forms. Some herbs are most productive when they are prepared as decoctions while others prove to be more appropriate in capsules.

Important Considerations When Making Teas

Infusions and Decoctions:

Not all herbs are suitable for making medicinals.

  • It is important to cover your pot while boiling or steeping to prevent the aromatic oils from evaporating into the air. A lid will cause the steam to condense back into the water.
  • Use a glass or ceramic container. Aluminum, iron, tin or other metals will leach into the tea. Although copper and stainless steel may be okay, herbalists recommend you use clean glass, ceramic, pottery or enameled pot with no chips.
  • Use pure water. Fresh spring water or distilled water is best.
  • Boil the water first, then remove it from the heat and add the herb or pour over the herb.
  • Strain the finished tea before capping and storing.
  • Refrigerate if kept for more than a few hours.
Best Infusing Teapot on the internet – And it looks so great

Herbal teas are quite pleasant and a healthy addition to your diet. They have a mild relaxing or invigorating effect, depending on the character of the herb. They don’t, however, have the potency, the medicinal dose, of the active constituents in herbs. Single strength herbal teas can be taken as often as you wish.

The easy way to make a medicinal cup of tea is to triple up on herbal tea bags or the loose tea leaves that you would normally use and steep them in one cup of very hot water, covered, for ten minutes. By tripling the amount of tea you come very close to the medicinal value of an infusion. Dosage is in cups per day.

Tea:

  • To use bulk dried herbs, toss a quantity of the herb in a nonmetallic container, pour in boiling water and allow to steep for ten to 20 minutes. Most herbalists prescribe an ounce of dried herb (you should invest in a small scale) in a pint of water.
  • Strain the herb parts. Usually, the tea is consumed at room temperature.
  • Drink the tea hot only if the goal is to induce a sweat or to break up a cough or cold.
  • Sip throughout the day, the cumulative dose would be one to four cups a day depending on the herb.

Infusions are another easy way to make an herbal remedy.

A decoction is made by boiling the hard and woody parts of herbs.

Because extracts and tinctures are much more potent than decoctions or infusions, much smaller dosages are used. They are dosed in drops, not cups.

Horsetail (Shavegrass) Herb

Horsetail (Shavegrass) Herb

Horsetail is also known as Shavegrass and has other names. Horsetail is a grass or reed that grows in marshy areas, it loves wet feet (roots). It has soft needles rather than leaves and no flowers. It contains an abundance of silica which makes it a rigid upright plant.  It used to grow as big as a tree but not anymore. Now it only grows about a meter tall but the roots are more than a meter into the ground. This is why it is so rich with minerals that it gathers from deep within the ground. It has phosphorus, iron, magnesium, manganese, chromium, vitamin A, and other minerals, as well as saponins and phytosterols which help emulsify fats in water so it can flush out of the body.

Silica is the most abundant mineral on the planet and silica is critical to build and maintain bones, tissue, repair of ligaments, assist in osteoporosis and strengthen the integrity of the veins and arteries of the cardiovascular system. Horsetail contains more than 35% silica. Silica is used to help absorb calcium properly. There must be a good balance of silica and calcium for bones to be strong. It’s a primary mineral used to improve skin, hair, nails and is very necessary for collagen. It promotes hair growth, strengthens hair, stops hair loss and repairs split ends. Silica also helps to get rid of aluminum in the body so we find it helps with Alzheimer’s and brain conditions.

Horsetail is a tonic remedy that strengthens tissues of the body including the lungs, sinuses, and kidneys. It was used in Greek medicine as a kidney tonic, diuretic and to help promote urine flow, bladder, kidney infections, kidney stones, gout and asthma and flushes out waste. Boil it up into a tea and drink it. It is very bitter and astringent which allows muscles to contract. This will also tone the urinary tract to help with bed wetting and incontinence in the elderly. Because it is a diuretic don’t take it just before bed. Use the tea as a mouthwash and gargle for mouths sores, bleeding gums, and gingivitis.

Horsetail has also been used for treating bronchitis and tuberculosis. It assists in respiratory health because it is high in salicylic acid which can help strengthen lungs and increase resistance to disease, bronchitis, dry cough, and nasal blockage.   The tea is high in quercetin, an anti-inflammatory compound that stabilizes mast cells that become easily inflamed during allergic reactions.  Horsetail is an excellent daily tea for people with asthma, especially when mixed with mullein leaf.  It strengthens lung tissue and prevents inflammation, while mullein helps to remove congestion and increase pliability of lung air sacks.

Use more herb in the water and boil it longer to make a decoction or mash up the fresh herb and use it as a paste topically on the skin and as a poultice for wounds and pain and for rheumatism and inflammation particularly. Put 4 oz (a handful) of horsetail herb into an old sock and throw it into a hot bath to soak in for muscle and joint pain and inflammation. Use the sock of herbs to rub on the skin.  It also assists the prostate by reducing swelling and inflammation.

Please Note: It’s best not to use it for longer than 2 months at a time so your body can rest from it. Don’t eat too much raw Horsetail green stalks because they contain thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys thiamine or vitamin B1 stores in the body.

The best part of this herbal tea that is so good for you, is that you can gather the pink or white clover blossoms in the fields. They grow wild everywhere. Grab the blossoms (with some potent leaves) dry them in a shaded area under a fly screen, (not in the sunshine because we want to preserve the delicate essential oils that are so good for us) and keep it in a container in the kitchen handy for an everyday cuppa wellness (with some delicious and good for you honey).

Making the tea with the fresh blossoms will be a new experience. It tastes so fresh and “green”. Gotta love it!

Grow your own garden and herbs

Grow your own garden and herbs

During the last decades there has been a change towards mechanization and homogenization of farming, which uses pesticides, additives, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers and mass-production techniques. All this is clearly affecting mankind’s health, and new diseases are spreading rapidly amongst humans and animals.

The World Health Organization produces reports to show how the use of chemicals and other products on food, coupled with the manufacturing processes involved, are actually a threat for our health.

Food Composter

If you have space for a few pots or even a small piece of land, it is a wise decision to grow your own organic vegetable garden. Make your own compost from kitchen waste etc. Here we have seven reasons for doing this:

  1. You should not use additives in your vegetables. Research by organic food associations has shown that additives in our food can cause heart diseases, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity.
  2. You don’t have to use pesticides or synthetic fertilizers used in your own garden. These chemical products are applied to boost crops regardless of plagues or weather conditions, and they detrimentally affect the quality of the vegetables. Besides, pesticides are usually poisonous to humans.
  3. Your vegetables will not be genetically modified (GM). Antibiotics, drugs and hormones are used on vegetables to grow more and larger ones. GMO results in all your vegetables looking all the same and are usually tasteless. Besides, we end up consuming the hormones that have been used on the vegetables, with the potential risks for our health.
  4. Eating your own organic vegetables will be much more healthy for you. They will not contain any of the products or chemicals named above, and they will be much more natural than any ones you would find at the supermarket. Your health will not be at risk because you will then know that nothing has been added to your vegetables.
  5. Your own organic vegetables will be much more tasty. The use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones and antibiotics make vegetables grow unnaturally and take the taste away from them. With organic vegetables, your cooking will be enhanced as their flavor will show fully.
  6. Organic farming is friendly to the environment. Because you won’t use pesticides or other equally harming products on your vegetables, you will not damage the soil or the air with the chemical components.
  7. When you grow your own organic vegetables you are contributing to your own self-sustainability and the sustainability of the planet. Small communities have been founded where members exchange products that they grow naturally, thus contributing to create a friendly and better place for us all.

In the end, eating organic products only means that we do not add anything else to them than they would naturally have. And, additives, fertilizers, pesticides or hormones are not components of naturally grown food.
